American Cinema of the 2010s

Dennis Bingham

The essays of American Cinema of the 2010s explore the superhero blockbusters, low-budget sleepers, and films in between, all made in a period of tumult in the culture and change in the film industry as cinema changed from celluloid to digital and Netflix and Amazon became major movie production companies. Films discussed include Frozen, Guardians of the Galaxy, Zero Dark Thirty, The Force Awakens, Get Out, Mad Max: Fury Road, American Sniper, Hereditary, and Once Upon a Time . . . in Hollywood.

Making Ideas Visible in the Eighteenth Century

Jennifer Milam

During the Enlightenment, there was a tension between word and image that eighteenth-century artists increasingly manipulated in their assertion of the visual independence of ideas. This book considers how making ideas visible assisted in the aesthetic understanding of intellectual processes engaged by works of art.

Salsa Consciente

Andrés Espinoza Agurto

This volume explores the significations and developments of the Salsa consciente movement, a Latino musico-poetic and political discourse that exploded in the 1970s but then dwindled in momentum into the early 1990s. Through the analysis of over 120 different Salsa songs from lyrical and musical perspectives that span a period of over sixty years, the author makes the argument that the urban Latino identity expressed in Salsa consciente was constructed largely from diasporic, deterritorialized, and at times imagined cultural memory, and furthermore proposes that the Latino/Latin American identity is in part based on African and Indigenous experience, especially as it relates to Spanish colonialism. A unique study on the intersection of Salsa and Latino and Latin American identity, this volume will be especially interesting to scholars of ethnic studies and musicology alike.
